The History of Cupcakes

We all love these mini cakes and as a cake decorator I find myself asking a few questions... so its only fitting that I find out the answers in a blog post.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CUPCAKE?
While cake itself has been around since ancient times, cupcakes started their long journey into our lives in America. It is believed that the 1st ever reference to 'a cake baked in small cups', rather than as a layer cake, was in Amelia Simmons' 'American Cookery' in 1796.

WHICH WAS THE FIRST CUPCAKE BAKERY?
Candace Nelson is the founder and pastry chef of Sprinkles Cupcakes, the world's first cupcake bakery. Started in Beverly Hills in 2005, Candace's sophisticated take on the classic American cupcake made Sprinkles an overnight bakery sensation.

WHO INVENTED CAKES?
According to the food historians, the ancient Egyptians were the first culture to show evidence of advanced baking skills. The Oxford English Dictionary traces the English word cake back to the 13th century. It is a derivation of 'kaka', an Old Norse-word. Medieval European bakers often made fruitcakes and gingerbread.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MUFFIN AND A CUPCAKE?
If it's not too sweet, is perhaps made with whole wheat flour, and is more likely to be loaded with fruit than candy, it's a muffin. A muffin can also be savory instead of sweet. The texture is usually dryer and slightly denser than their cupcake cousins. Cupcakes are, well, miniature cakes.

WHO STARTED BAKING?
The 'Who' is quite difficult to find out...'Where' was a little easier. The world's oldest oven was discovered in Croatia in 2014 dating back 6500 years ago. The Ancient Egyptians baked bread using yeast, which they had previously been using to brew beer. Bread baking began in Ancient Greece around 600 BC, leading to the invention of enclosed ovens.

WHO INVENTED CUPCAKE LINERS?
They come in a variety of colours, patterns and sizes... and if you're anything like me, you can't make up your mind with all the choices. But who was it that had that super bright idea of creating them? The first commercial paper cupcake liners for the US market were produced by an artillery manufacturer called the James River Corporation, motivated by the dwindling military market of the post-war era. During the 1950s, the paper baking cup became very popular.

I hope this little post has managed to answer some of the questions you might have had. If there are any more, I'd be glad to help answer them.
