Quilling Basics - the loose coil, the teardrop, the marquise and the leaf shape

With this post you will learn the second part of the quilling basics tutorial.
*The loose coil
*The teardrop
*The marquise
*The leaf shape

The loose coil is what you see here above in the Christmas stocking. It's really easy once you get the hang of it and you have full control over the size you want to make.

Materials you will need:
Quilling strips (I'm using the 5mm ones here)
Quilling tool
Clear drying PVA glue

Begin just as you would any quilling project and roll to form a peg or tight coil. Just don't apply any glue. Roll till the end and hold it firm.

TIP: Be very careful at this point because it can unravel very quickly if given a chance.

Holding it firmly between thumb and forefinger carefully edge it off the quilling tool.

Slowly part your thumb and index finger and you will start to see the peg slowly loosen and unravel.

Once it has reached the size you desire, apply a little glue and stick it in place.

Your loose coil should look something like this now.

Once you have formed your loose coil you can make any shape you want. To turn the loose coil into a teardrop shape all you have to do is hold the loose coil between your thumb and index finger and slowly pinch one end to form a drop shape.

This is what you will have as a result.

The Marquise - To create this shape first create a loose coil, then holding it between thumb and index fingers of both your hands slowly begin to pinch.

TIP: Do not pinch too much towards the centre because that will just make it too flat.

And there you have it... the marquise. This is a wonderful shape with which to create flowers.

From the marquise we can form the leaf shape. Once you have the marquise shape formed, while still holding it between thumb and index fingers of both hands, gently push one hand away from you while simultaneously pulling the other hand towards you.

There you have it... the leaf shape. All flowers need them. Some large and others small.

TIP: When creating flowers using the marquise shape, you'll want to get all of the petals the same size. To make this easier for you, I'd suggest purchasing a quilling board.
They are available in most stationary stores and even online.
